William Everett Erwin Jr

W. E. "Jack" Erwin, Jr., died peacefully after a lingering illness on Thursday, May 12, 2016 , in Farmington, NM, at Namaste House. Jack was born September 8, 1924 in Cisco, Texas, to W. E. (Ike) Erwin and Leona Mae Dwiggins. He is survived by his wife Wanda, his brother Bob Erwin, two sons, R. Ashley Erwin and James D. Erwin, two grandsons, one granddaughter, and three great-grandchildren. He had lived in Farmington for almost 50 years. He and Wanda celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary last December.
Jack was retired from El Paso Natural Gas Company, having been with them 40 years. He started as a welder's helper in Jal, New Mexico, helped lay hundreds of miles of pipeline as a welder across the southwest, and retired as the vice president of the Farmington region. Jack was respected and like by all who knew him. He was recently recognized by the Desk and Derrick Club of Farmington as having made significant contributions to the commercial gas industy.
Jack was a notable athlete in his younger days. He graduated from Jal High School in 1942 where he made the New Mexico All-State team as a quarterback and received a basketball scholarship to the New Mexico School of Mines. He played in the state championship football game in December 1941, two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. This changed many plans. He was drafted into the Army in 1943. Jack served in the European Theater and until D-Day, in Gen. Patton's 16th Armored Division.
Jack enjoyed hunting and was an avid golfer. He belonged to the San Juan Country Club where he won and also help put on a number of tournaments. He was instrumental in developing the Riverview Golf Course for El Paso Natural Gas Company, which was later donated to the public school system and is now operated by San Juan County. He was also instrumental in the development of the Rivers Edge city golf course in Needles, California.
A memorial service will be held on June 17, 2016, at 2:00 pm. The service will be held at Bethany Christian Church, 711 E. 30th St., Farmington, NM.
