Walter A. Zahrt, 79, of Farmington, passed away on April 29, at his home in Farmington. Walter was born on march 24, 1937 in Fort Wayne, IN.

Walter Zahrt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016, peacefully, in his home in Farmington. He was born in Ft. Wayne, Ind. and grew up on a farm in nearby Leo, Ind.
Walt and his family moved from Michigan to Colorado in 1971. Shortly thereafter, he took a job as a junior high principal in Ignacio, where the family lived from 1971-1998. Walt worked primarily as an educator in roles from teacher to superintendent, and also served on the Ignacio School Board. After retiring from education, he worked in sales for the Red Book Directory.
Walt is remembered for his love of family, his faith, and his service to the community as a volunteer chaplain at SJRMC. His family fondly remembers camping and fishing with him and also his sense of humor and his pranks. He was a dog lover and an avid Broncos and Indianapolis 500 fan.
Walt is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Cavin Zahrt; their four children, Anne Zahrt-Brewer, Susan (Dan) Thomas, Betsy (Graeme) Geib, and Joseph (Adelina) Zahrt; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
His funeral was held on Thursday, May 5 at St. John's Episcopal Church. A family memorial is planned for a later date
