Tom Jones Jr., 89, of Hogback, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014, in Farmington. He was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Hogback, to Tom Jones Sr. and Benally Bisti.
Tom attended the old Shiprock B.I.A. School up to the 10th grade. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps beginning Nov. 26, 1943, and was honorably discharged Dec. 30, 1945. He served as a messenger for the 3rd Division, Unit 297 Navajo Code Talkers 767 and the Navajo Code Talkers 642 platoons based in Camp Pendleton, Calif. He also served in Iwo Jima, Guam. Tom was retired in 1983, from BHP-Utah International. He worked for a Uranium mining company in Rico, Ouray and Slick Rock, Colo. He was a field superintendent for Kerr McGee in Red Valley, Ariz.
He played baseball in his early years and later he enjoyed farming, working around the house, spending time with his wife and being with all his family.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Mae Jones; son David Tom Jones; daughter Sarah Jones; his parents; sisters, Mabel Lansing and Irene Smith; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
He is survived by his sons, Stanley T. Jones and Tommy Jones; daughter Carmelita Nelson; brother Charley Nelson; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the Dineh Christian Center in Shiprock, with Pastor Nancy Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Shiprock Veteran's Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Winifred J. Nelson, Byron J. Nelson, Kyle Tom Jones, Manuel Beyal, Gregory Natani and Matthew RedNest.
