Helen Tivia Steele was born on Aug. 15, 1925, south of Cuba, N.M., to Pedro Anaya and Matiana Marquez. She was raised by the Perez family South of Durango, Colo. Helen married Lee Clayton Steele on July 9,1947, and lived on McCoy Street in Aztec for the rest of her life. Clayton worked in the oil field most of his life and passed away in 1973. Helen worked at local restaurants and in the Aztec High School cafeteria as a cook until she retired in 1988. She died peacefully at home on the morning of Dec. 20. 2015. She is survived by her sons, Richard Montano (Rita) of West Jordan, Utah, Jimmie Steele (Michete) of Aztec, and Leon Steele (Barbara) of Bloomfield; grandchildren, Kimberly Allen (Tim), Loretta Montano, Steven Robinson, Jessica Gomez (Felipe) and Mandy Bradley (Art). She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews. She had several wonderful friends and neighbors who helped her later in life.
A rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 26 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 500 N. Mesa Verde Ave. in Aztec followed by funeral Mass at 10 a.m.
Pallbearers are Felipe Gomez, Cade Gomez, Haze Gomez, Art Bradley, Marvin Wood, and Ralph Serrano. Internment will follow in the Aztec Cemetery, 700 Chamisa St. in Aztec.
