Sophia Lucille Irvin Rustad, 69, of Farmington passed away Monday, February 10, 2014 at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was born May 12, 1944 in the hospital in Alamosa, Colorado the daughter of Virgil Edward Irvin and Sophia Weston Irvin. Sophia was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Margaret Carolyn Hepler, Catherine Louise McElroy, her brothers David Virgil Irvin and infant Edward Paul Irvin. Sophia leaves behind her husband Kenneth G. Rustad and their son Rurik B. Rustad; sisters Mary Judith Brewer, Susan Annette Andrews, Martha Rae Kannard, Rebecca Kaye Smith, brothers Dennis Weston and Andrew James; her large bouquet of nieces and a troop of wooden soldier nephews all of which were treasures to her always. Because she was such a dedicated family research historian, those who loved her were care-filled with this preceding information. Bear with us, she was a fiery red head. Sophia loved a good book, a special pair of shoes, and the right tint to her red hair. In her youth she shopped at Fleur De Lis. She loved her garden, the challenge of African violets and a McDonald's egg mcmuffin. She loved a stimulating conversation, but had no patience for ignorance, and was short of tolerance for close-mindedness or bigotry. Sophia wasn't perfect, but always gave others the right to be so without expectation. She was politically aware and loved to share her opinions with her husband and son. She loved the Savior and her church congregation, who were her second family. Her passing came through a mighty struggle. The prayers and concern of all of you who loved and respected her (and us) is a beautiful testimony to the marvel of human compassion; until that moment when her magnificent heart in that small stature of body stopped beating. We who loved her will not stumble and weep for long; but rather pick up the baton she passed and carry it with us to our finish line. "Adios", "Ha-Gooneh", "Good-bye" for now. Cremation will take place and memorial services for Sophia are Friday, February 14th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, Farmington 8th Ward Chapel, 4400 N. College Blvd., in Farmington with Bishop George Payne conducting. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery. Sophia's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 East Ute, (505) 325-8688
