Sheldon Leroy Smith, 86, of Navajo Dam, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at home in Navajo Dam. He was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Bangor, Maine, to Harold David and Marion Leathers Smith.
Known as a character, Sheldon led a full and interesting life. He married Marion McCrae on Sept. 26, 1948, in South Gouldsboro, Maine. They made their home on Mount Desert Island, Maine. They were blessed with four daughters, Penny, Jody, Michael and Melissa. Sheldon was a lobster fisherman and a fish buyer. He and Marion owned a zoo and restaurant. He eventually became employed by the federal government and retired from the Nationa Park Service. He had many talents that he put to use over the years. Sheldon was a boxer, and he won many fights until an injury cut his career short. He became a Golden Gloves coach, successfully coaching several champions. He was a storyteller, a published poet and entrepreneur. He could never sit still and was always planning his next adventure. Sheldon was a well-known trapper and a teacher of the skill of trapping. He had never met a stranger and had many life-long friends. He loved living in New Mexico, and he loved the Navajo people and culture.
Sheldon was a great brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Sheldon was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marion Smith; and his brother, Richard Smith. He is survived by his wife, Marion McCrae Smith; daughters, Penny (John) Dillingham, Jody (Mike) Larimore, Michael (Dennis) Hester and Melissa (Kelly) Lane; brother, Vaughn Smith; sisters, Eleanor Farrington, Roberta Scott, Barbara Haskell and Gloria Faulkner; grandchildren, Tamara, Tina, Tracey, Scott, Molly, Josie, Tanya, Macy, Nichole, Erin and Patrick, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at a location to be announced.
