Opal I. Owens, 90, of Kirtland, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 in Farmington. She was born April 26, 1922 in Floyd County, Texas to Walter Montague Knight and Cora Alice Pace Knight. Opal was a farm girl from West Texas. She grew up hoeing cotton alongside her daddy, where she learned the value of hard work. As an adult, she owned a café, drove a gasoline truck, and worked as a bookkeeper, in addition to raising three sons and a daughter. In her spare time, she liked to crochet and embroidery, leaving behind many keepsakes for those she loved. In her retirement years, Opal took great pleasure in her grandchildren. Her favorite thing was to have the grandkids come to her house for a sleep-over and then treat them to a Happy Meal at McDonalds. Everyone loved to ride in Grandma's ""big white car with the red seats.""Opal was preceded in death by her infant daughters, Brenda Joyce and Doris Elaine; her parents, Walter and Alice Knight; sister, Geneva Elliott and one grandchild. She is survived by her sons, Billy (Donna) Owens, David (Julie) Owens, Glenn (Linda) Owens and a daughter, Mary Alice (DeWayne) Whipple. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.Visitation for Opal will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home. A grave side service will be 11 a.m. on Monday, April 15, at Memory Gardens with DeWayne Whipple presiding. Pallbearers are Jared Whipple, Wesley Whipple, Jeremy Heslop, Nolan Stewart, Reed Harris and DeWayne Whipple.Opal's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E.
