Omar Jack Benally, 73, of Upper Fruitland, returned to his heavenly home on December 17, 2015, after he made the choice to preserve his quality of life outside aggressive cancer treatment. In giving his life to the Lord, this had given him peace as he was ready to go home.
Omar was born on May 18, 1942, to the late Shalow and Mary Benally of Lower Fruitland and Cudei, respectively. He was raised by the late Reverend Eugene Botelho, who was an Episcopalian pastor. Omar grew up primarily in the Farmington area. He was a graduate of Kirtland Central High School and received his electrician license in Oklahoma. He was blessed with his late beautiful and loving wife, Rena Benally, and they resided in Fruitland. After working with the pipeline, in the oil fields, and in construction, Omar retired at the age of 65.
Omar's interest in boxing led him to an amateur New Mexico state title. He loved to read the newspaper daily and always had his nose in a novel. Being a jack of all trades, he kept himself occupied. Known as Papa OJ and Pappy, he loved spending time with and being around his grandchildren, most of all.
Omar is survived by his children, Doniel Pioche, Keith Pioche, Deanna WhiteFace, D.C. (Elaine) Gomez, Tina (Julian) John, Benjamin (Iris) Benally, and Eltheya Blackie (Jeremy) Chino. He also is survived by11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren,
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22 at San Juan Mission, 1257 Mission Ave., in Farmington. Burial will take place in the San Juan Mission Cemetery. A small reception will follow at the San Juan Mission Parish Hall.
