O.A. "Johnny" Johnson, 99, of Aztec, passed away on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, in Farmington. He was born March 13, 1915, in Carbon, Texas, to J.B. and Alice C. Basham Johnson.
Johnny was from a family of 10 children, four boys and six girls. He was raised in Carbon, and attended a small school there, where he completed the eighth grade. He and his brothers all began working at a young age. Johnny had worked hard in agriculture, road building and in the oil field. He moved to Aztec in 1954. He worked as a cable tool driller and most recently with James Manus. He completed many wells for El Paso Natural Gas Company.
Johnny enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, working on his place. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed laughing. After retiring, he spent a great deal of time at the Aztec Senior Center with family and friends. He loved playing card games, dominoes and pool. He also loved being outdoors and country music.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son Mike Smith; daughters, Donna Walker, Sonja Hunter, Linda Johnson, Sharon Green and Judy Kent; his sister Ina Reynolds; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5 at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, with Jack Meador officiating. Interment will follow in Aztec Cemetery. The reception will be at the Aztec Civic/Senior Center, 101 S. Park Ave. in Aztec.
Pallbearers are Darby West Jr., Johnny West, Johnny West Jr., Julian Garcia, Wil Wood and Carey Green. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Madewell, Monte Hunter, Mike Smith, Darby West Sr. and David Green.
Johnny's care is entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 405 S. Main Ave., 505-334-9332.
