Christine Durham, a woman of substance passed away on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013. She was born to Margaret Catherine Bowman and Robert E. Austin in Abilene, Texas on July 7, 1914 and lived the true life of a prairie girl in La Mesa, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Don and two grandchildren. Christine was a true yellow rose of Texas with lineage to Stephen F. Austin, the founder of Texas and Dwight D. Eisenhower was her cousin. Christine married the love of her life, Lee Durham Sept. 27, 1933. Christine and Lee raised a family of five, Robert R. Durham, Don E. Durham, Gary R. Durham, Guylynn Durham and Cheryl Lee Durham. The Durham family grew to include 19 grandchildren, Carol Chenault, Richard Austin, Lynn Alexander, Bill Golden, Scott Durham (deceased), Susan Evans, David Durham, Christopher Durham, Sarah Durham, Bobby Oliphint, Markey Hand, Rebecca Durham, Jodi Flanagan, Gary Lee Durham, Francis Durham, Christy Linn, Carolyn Marquez, Celeste Gordon (deceased) and Neil Gordon. She has 31 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren to carry on her legacy.
Lee and Christine moved the family to Gobernador and later to Farmington in 1956. She started Durham Interiors in 1958 and remained in business for thirty years. Her reputation of character and professionalism is incredible. Visitation for Christine will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., tonight, Wednesday, March 27, at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home. Christine's life will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, at Piñon Hills Community Church, 5101 N. Dustin Ave., then you can hear the ""rest of the story."" Internment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. A reception will follow at Piñon Hills Community Church. Mrs. Durham's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E.
