Nellie L. Davis, 93, of Burnham, passed away on Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, in Farmington. She was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Burnham, to John and Norma Lamone. She was born to the Ute Clan and born for the Many Hogans Clan.
Nellie attended Rough Rock Demonstration School to learn how to make Navajo baskets. She was a self-employed weaver and rancher. She was know for her riding abilities and was named Rancherette of the Year in 1998. Nellie worked for CETA program in the 1970s. She was an active member Burnham, and Newcomb Senior centers. She was involved with the local veteran's group, due to the fact her son and nephews served in the Vietnam War. She was an active member of Burnham Chapter where she was involved with community activities. Nellie often entered Turkey Shoots and won in the .22 rifle division. She was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting with children and grandsons. She was known for her running abilities at field days. Her hobbies included gardening, crafts, quilting, making her own clothes, basket making, and weaving. Most of all she was a kind and loving mother to her children, grandchildren, Arthur and Lamone family. She enjoyed cooking for them as well as guests. Nellie would help relatives at traditional ceremonies.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband David Davis; son, Wallace Davis; daughter, Lucy M. Davis; parents; brothers, Bradley, Freddie and Frankie Lamone; and her sister, Eva Arthur. She is survived by her son, Albert D. Davis; daughters, Geneva Jim, Joanne Silversmith and Lynda Davis; grandchildren, Eric Davis, Diane Davis, Shawn Davis, Leon (Cheryl) Davis, Waylon Jim, Wilhelmina Jim, Krysle (Daniel) Jennings, Wilma (Brandon) Horse, Nolan (Rolinda) Silversmith, Nicole Silversmith, Nathan Silversmith, Sangeleta (Eric) Jim, Danielle Bigman and Gilbert Sanchez Jr.; great-grandchildren, Michael Davis, Justin Davis, David Davis, Aaliyah Davis, Kordell Jim, Wynonna Jim, Shania Horse, Naomi Horse, Adriannah Horse, Natalie Silversmith, Keyosha O. Jim, Kaeleb Jim, Hayley K. Bigman, Ayden L. Bigman and Daylana Garcia. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and grandchildren of the Arthur and Lamone families.
A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27 at Cope Memorial Chapel of Kirtland.
A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28 in the family cemetery in Burnham with the Rev. Raymond Henry officiating.
A reception will be at 1 p.m. at the Burnham Chapter house.
Pallbearers are Waylon Jim, Nathan Silversmith, Koory Arthur, Leon Davis, Eric Jim and Derek Tso.
