Mollie Yazzie Russell
June 3, 1914 - March 2, 2016
Mollie Yazzie Russell, 101, of Aztec, went home peacefully while at rest on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, in Aztec. She was born June 3, 1917, in Yoh Tsoh, NM, located north of Sanostee to Hosteen Yazzie Begay and Toh-hah-Talhy Bitsih. She was Born to To'aheedliinii (The Water Flows Together Clan) and born for Hooghan l ani (Many Hogans clan) which is located east of Red Valley and north of Sanostee. Mollie started her career as a baker in southwest Colorado. She later met and married her husband, Harry Russell. Mollie relocated to St. Michael's Ariz., where a Father from a local church saw her potential and encouraged her to apply for a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Having the Father as a reference, Mollie started her career for more than 30 years with the BIA which led her to work in various locations, such as the historic Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah, to Leupp, Ariz., and finally in Sanostee, where she retired. Mollie's home was located in Red Valley which she loved so much and commuted to Sanostee back and forth where she raised crops and cared for livestock. Our family is thankful for the values she instilled on us. We are at peace knowing that her words of wisdom and encouragement are with us. Mollie was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Russell; her parents, Hosteen Yazzie Begay and Toh-hah-Talhy Bitsih; her brothers, James Tyler and Lee Tyler; and her grandparents, Yohhatahley and his wife.
