Mercedes Chavez

September 23, 1942 — January 20, 2015

Mercedes "Mercy" Chavez, of Waterflow, joined her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015. Mercy was born on Sept. 23, 1942, in Albuquerque, to Gabriel and Manuela Chavez.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Raymond Chavez; her son-in-law Lee Mascarenas; and nephew Phillip Tafoya.
Mercy is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Ben Chavez; daughters, Deanna Chavez (Christopher Fuqua), Stephanie Chavez (Mark Martinez) and Donnell Sanchez (Eddie Sanchez); grandchildren, Jessica Corral (Silvano Corral), Felicia Luna (Philip Marez), Amy Mascarenas, Mercedes Salazar, Sophia Salazar and David Sanchez; and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Grace and Megan Corral; siblings, Ruben and Song Hui Chavez, Bernadette and Ben Gonzales, Sofia Martinez, Agnes and Pat Martinez, Michael Chavez, Rosemary and David Tafoya and Sandra Padilla; special aunt Rosina Marino, numerous loving in-laws; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mercy touched the lives of so many people, through her devotion to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 30 years of substitute teaching, over 50 years of teaching CCD, and her involvement in her community. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister; an outstanding cook and an avid gardener, and a dear friend to anyone she met. Mercy never said no to anyone in need. She was loved by everyone, and no one ever left her home without a cup of coffee, a hot meal and a delicious dessert. She never rested until her final day. Heaven has truly received an angel of immeasurable worth. She can never be replaced and will forever be loved and missed.
Pallbearers are Chris Fuqua, Mark Martinez, Eddie Sanchez, Silvano Corral, Phillip Marez and Rick Vallejos.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 at Sacred Heart Church in Waterflow. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31 at San Juan Catholic Center Road 6446, in Kirtland.
