February 18, 1930 - June 3, 2016

Mattie Irene Bishop, 86, of Aztec, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2016, in Aztec. Born February 18, 1930, the oldest of 4 children to Elmer and Mabel Robison, Mattie "Irene" Robison. Irene charmed everyone with her kindness, thoughtfulness, and radiant smile including Jack Bishop, whom she married on December 23, 1950. Her story is also his story, as they lived life together to the fullest for 65 years plus as best friends and companions. They bestow laughter and love to everyone they meet. In 1950, Irene became a teacher after graduating from Highlands University. She taught children and retired at Lindrith, NM after 26 years of teaching. Irene embodied the title of teacher; she saw the world as a tool to help others learn. Whether she was gathering books, craft materials, or science experiments, she was always gently encouraging those around her to keep learning and creating. Irene loved music and started each day by playing the piano. She love to create, her house and her loved one's houses are full of her creative pursuits: paintings, crochet blankets, sewing projects, and dolls, dolls, dolls. She generously gave works of her hands to charities, friends, family, and perfect strangers she met. Contained in her purse she always had something she made and she would give it to them to brighten their day. On June 3, 2016 Irene went home to the Lord. While those of us left behind mourn the loss of her laugh and presence we cling to the hope of the resurrection and life and pray for perseverance to finish our race with grace as she did. She will be missed.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Robison and Mabel Holland; her sister, Jane Brown. She is survived by her husband, Jack Bishop; her sons, Keith (Karen)Bishop, Alan (Lori) Bishop; her brother, Albert Robison(A.J.); her sister, Elmerine Everett; 8 grandchildren, Heather and Peter Myer, Jack and Courtney Bishop, April and Patrick Ramsey, Scott and Melissa Bishop; 7 Great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Daniel, Edmund, Irene and James Myer, David and Daniel Bishop.
