Luther Begay, 85, of Sheep Springs, passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, in Shiprock. He was born March 10, 1928, in Sheep Springs, to Luke Boy and Mary Lou Begay. He was born to Hashtl'ishnii and born for Tabaahi.
Luther attended high school in Shiprock. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and fought in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1956.
He worked at the Sheep Springs Trading Post and for the Union Pacific Railroad and in the Homestate Uranium Mine. He also worked for the Navajo Nation as a Community Development Worker. He retired form the tribe in 1981. He become a rancher and preached across the Navajo Nation and tended to his family.
Luther was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruby Begay; his parents; brothers, Kee T. Begay and Chester Begay; sisters, Grace Bryant and one older sister.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie W. Begay; son, Edward Begay; daughters, Shirley Dez, Evelyn Begay and Clara James; brothers, Jerome Begay and Jones Begay; sisters, Betty Begay and Louise Vigil; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Sheep Springs Full Gospel Church, with Pastor Rondeal Anderson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sheep Springs Community Cemetery.
The reception will be at the Sheep Springs Chapter House.
Pallbearers are Jeremiah Begay, Jerald King, Nathan James, Dennis James Jr., Larry Watchman, Randolph Harrison and Joshua Morgan.
