Lawrence Bucholz
Lawrence L. Bucholz, 79, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, in Farmington. He was born March 1, 1935, in Pickney, Mich., to Ernest and Marian (Knapp) Bucholz. He grew up in Dexter, Mich. and graduated from Dexter High School in 1952. He attended Eastern Michigan University for a year before enlisting in the U. S. Army. He served in France for two years as an operator. He met his future wife Phyllis Wolfe, in his first year at Eastern Michigan University. After finishing his service with the Army, he and Phyllis were married Feb. 2, 1956, He returned to Eastern Michigan University and graduated in 1959 with a B.S. degree in science and education. He spent his summers working for the Michigan State Highway Department in testing and research division. They took a summer and toured Canada en route to their teaching jobs in Leadville, Colo., where he taught for two years. He then went to New Mexico State University to obtain his master's degree. Following that he was the principal at Dulce Independent schools for two years. Lawrence later returned to New State University to work on his doctorate. He went to Kansas State College in Pittsburgh, Kan. as an assistant professor in the department of teaching and was in charge of the student teachers. He was also assistant professor at NMSU. He was the director of the National Teaching Corps NMSU from 1964 to 1966. Lawrence was the director at San Juan College for several years and taught science at Heights Intermediate in Farmington for many years until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi scholarship societies. Lawrence's hobbies included camping, hiking, canoeing, archery, fishing, hunting, quarter horses, traveling, photography, and breeding and raising red angus cattle, LPB Red Angus. He had many high performing bulls at the Four Corners BCIA Bull Test for several years, including the top three high performing bulls in 1996.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Phyllis. He is survived by his son Eric Bucholz; daughter Lisa Schooley; sister Barbara Urbanovic; nieces, Kathleen Urbanovic, Karen Crawford and Kristine Singer; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
An informal service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Andrews Lake in Colorado. This was one of his favorite places to camp with his wife Phyllis.
