Farmington
Joseph I. Wiggins
Oct. 20, 1933 - Aug. 9, 2015
Joseph Isadore Wiggins, 81, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, in Farmington, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
Joe was a man of many diverse talents. He began his varied careers as a professional painter and taught himself to play the piano in his spare time. He played with some of the big-name bands before returning to New Mexico. While living in Aztec he formed the band that entertained the Durango community for many years at numerous night clubs. His many fans traveled from outside the area to hear him perform.
At the same time that he was entertaining in the evening, he attended Fort Lewis College and obtained his teaching degree. His love of teaching was apparent to the students who learned from him. He was a well-respected science teacher and coach in Aztec at Koogler Middle School. During and after his teaching career, he owned Music City in Aztec and in Durango. Both stores closed when financing rates become so high no one was buying pianos, organs and other musical instruments.
In 1981, Joe married his wife, Carole, and soon after got his Colorado real estate broker's license and appraiser's licenses. He subsequently owned Century 21 West Slope Realty in Cortez, Colo., for several years. After leaving his Cortez real-estate office, Joe and Carole moved to Farmington where Joe continued his real estate and appraisal businesses. A musician at heart, he continued to play for senior citizen and other events, along with his long-time friend and singer, Peggy Cole.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beverly Jo Connor. He is survived by his wife, Carole Wiggins; his son, Ray Wiggins of Watonga, Okla.; and granddaughter, Raylene Wiggins; brothers, Chris Wiggins of Durango, Colo., Richard Wiggins of Aztec and Paul Wiggins of Farmington; sisters, Reyes Cortez and Gloria DeAnda, both of Farmington and Rosie Ardini of Hampstead, N.H. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Dana Horn; and two grandchildren, Kaelan and Kortney, of Farmington.
Joe's care is entrusted to Alternative Choice Burial and Cremation, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington, 505-325-9611. Those who wish to express their condolences may do so at www.serenityandcompany.com http://www.serenityandcompany.com.
