John Alvin Smith completed his earthly journey and passed away peacefully at his home in Farmington Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017. John was more commonly known to his family, friends and in business by several nicknames, "Smitty" or "Ole." He was born April 10, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both his parents, John and Hulda Smith, were from Finland and immigrated to the United States living in Salt Lake City at the time of Smitty's birth.
Smitty was a Master Machinist by trade, and had an amazing ability to visualize how ANYTHING works mechanically and structurally and could build or fix almost anything. He married Maurine Powell of Blue Bell, Utah on Oct. 10, 1942. They had six children and their family has now grown to 64 including all of their grandchildren (17), great grandchildren (36) and now great-great grandchildren (3).
Smitty was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Melvin Smith and Elmer Smith; sisters, Sylvia McConaha and Helen Pollett; their first son, John Smith; daughter, MaryLee Gardner; and son, James Ole Smith. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Maurine Powell Smith; daughters, Marsha Lynn Smith of Texas, Deanna Fay Hadley of Salt Lake City and Pamela Rae (Greg) Morris of Farmington.
Services will be held in Roosevelt, Utah at a later date. Special thanks to Basin Home and Hospice for their love and care of our Dad, and especially to Tricia and Yvonne.
