John Clayton Evans

John Clayton Evans, 83, of Farmington passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at his home. John was born November 13, 1930 in Albuquerque, New Mexico the son of Frank Lanham Evans and Dr. Vera Lacy Evans. John was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and graduated from Albuquerque High in 1947. He was active in the youth group at Fruit Avenue Baptist Church. He attended Wayland Baptist University and New Mexico AandM (NMSU) before completing his Aeronautical Engineering degree from Northrup University in Inglewood, California. Upon earning his degree he was offered employment with Martin Marietta in Denver, Colorado. Later, he worked for Continental Airlines as a Hydraulics Engineer in Denver and then in Los Angeles, California. After working for McDonnell Douglas as a customer service engineer for 20+ years, he retired and moved to Farmington in 1994. His schooling was put on hold during the Korean War as he served 21 months in the Air Force as an AandP mechanic with a P-51 Mustang fighter/interceptor squadron in Long Beach, California. While in the service he met and married his wife of 60 years, Doris Williams Evans. He volunteered in California with the El Segundo Police Department in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. After moving to Farmington he was a member of Gideon's International, delivered for Meals on Wheels, and served on the Citizens Police Advisory Committee. John loved flying, camping, boating and watching his sons play high school football, baseball and basketball in California. After he moved to Farmington he enjoyed watching Connie Mack Baseball, both the summer season and each year's World Series. John was a Deacon at Emmanuel Baptist Church and as a faithful member for almost 20 years served on various ministry committees. He was preceded in death by his sweet wife Doris LaVonne Evans on January 31, 2013, his parents Frank Lanham Evans, and Dr. Vera Lacy Evans; sister Thelma Adele Evans; grandparents John Benton Evans, Virginia Adelaide Evans, Lula Lacy and Thomas Lacy; John leaves behind his sons Roger Evans (Denise), Neil Evans (Kelli) and Randy Evans (Helen), sister Audrey Fern Evans Rummel (Gus), 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many dear friends. Memorial services for John are Tuesday, January 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 211 W. 20th St. in Farmington with Pastor Steve Ballew officiating. Graveside services are Wednesday, January 15th at 12:00 Noon at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menual Blvd NE in Albuquerque. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Gideon's International. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all relatives and friends who were so kind and supportive during this time. Your kindness will always be remembered.
