Funeral services for Joe Spencer, 86, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at Cope Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Jerry Tom will officiate. Burial will by in Gallup City Cemetery.
Spencer was born June 10, 1931, in Gallup, into the Black Streak People Clan born for the Meadow People Clan.
Spencer worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and was an ONEO bus driver and Gallup-McKinley County Schools custodian. He enjoyed horseback riding and ranching. Spencer was a great community leader and a roadman for the Native American Church.
Survivors include his wife Elsie Spencer, of Spencer Valley; daughters Irene Joe, Roselene Joe, Marllyn Reeves, Marlene Custer and Elaine Spencer, all of Spencer Valley, and Sarah Houston, of Albuquerque; brother Archie Whitegoat; sisters Noreen Spencer and Alice Whitegoat, both of Spencer Valley; 24 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Lucy Spencer Whitegoat, father Charley, daughter Hattie West and brother Tom Ortiz.
Pallbearers will by Cody Custer, Kent Nelson, Isaac Joe, Lance Joe, Justin West and Bo Reeves.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Roseline Joe's residence in Spencer Valley.
Cope Memorial Chapel of Gallup, NM is entrusted with arrangements.
