Joe Bryan Gillentine

Joe Bryan Gillentine passed away on August 19, 2013 in Farmington. He was born June 21, 1926 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Travis and Avis Russet Gillentine. Joe's family moved to Omega, NM in 1934. Those days were hard and when there was nothing to eat, Joe would take his dog and come back with a rabbit for breakfast. Nine years later they moved back to Elk City, Oklahoma where Joe worked odd jobs and picked cotton. At the age of seventeen, Joe joined the Navy and served during WW11. Joe's family moved back to Omega and after the war Joe joined them to help homestead. Then he went on to Oregon with friends where he met his wife, Mona Basset. He worked in the logging business for awhile. Then in 1949 he and Mona moved to Aztec, New Mexico. Joe went to work for El Paso Natural Gas Company and after 35 years, retired to farming and trading. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Mona and younger brother Raymond. Joe is survived by an adopted daughter, Kathy and her two children, Bryan Petroff (whom Joe and Mona raised) and Angel. His sister, Ilene Blanton, nieces and nephews, also his sister-in-law Linda Gillentine, who cared for Joe the last 8 years of his life. Joe requested that there be no memorial services. Joe has been entrusted to Alternative Choice Funeral Home, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington, 505-325-9611.
