Jean Spivey Hagler

Jean Spivey Hagler, 84, of Farmington, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017, at San Juan Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Oxford, N.C. to Sarah and Malvern Spivey. In June, 1954, Jean married William N. Hagler. They lived a year in Raleigh, two years in Baltimore, Md., six years in Bartlesville, Okla. and five years in Tulsa, Okla. In 1968, they moved to Farmington, her favorite home of all.
Jean grew up in Raleigh, N.C., and attended UNC at Greensboro majoring in music, a lifelong passion. Many of Jean's involvements were connected to music. She taught piano for many years, sang in the San Juan Symphony Chorus and in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was substitute organist for many years. She served on the original Board of the Civic Center Foundation for the Performing Arts, the Four Corners Opera Association Board and the Fine Arts Committee at San Juan College.
Jean was a member and served as Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, was a member of Chapter AE of the PEO Sisterhood, arranged flowers for Hospice patients, was chairman of the Charity Ball in the early 70s and played piano for the Follies for two years, along with Ferdie Ogren. In 1982, she began taking Jazzercise classes, which she attended until recently.
Jean adored her family and friends. Her granddaughters were her very special delight. She loved traveling with her friends and family, the good friends she played so many bridge games with, little babies, animals and the earth's great beauty.
Jean is survived by her husband, Bill; sons, Garry (Starla), Scott (Dan) and Randy (Audrey); granddaughters, Andrea and Natalie; sister, Dorothy Bryant; nephews, Rick and Randy Burnham; niece, Kimberly Hand; and grand-nieces, Alexandra Hand and Amanda Burnham.
Memorial services for Jean are Saturday, April 1st at 11:30 am at First United Presbyterian Church, 865 N. Dustin Ave., Farmington with Reverend Glenn Perica officiating. Inurnment will be at the First United Presbyterian Church Columbarium at a later date.
