Janice S. (Sullivan) Hampton

April 14, 1920 — November 14, 2012

Janice Douglass Hampton was born and raised in Russellville, Ark. April 14, 1920 to Walsie Fletcher Sullivan and Fred Sullivan. She died at Life Care Center in Farmington on Nov. 14, 2012. Janice grew up on a farm that grew cotton near the Arkansas River. She and her family were the backbone of their little country church and were there every time the doors opened. After graduating, she met John Douglass at her Daddy's café, "The Little Red Shanty" near the railroad tracks that catered to people working and riding on the trains; they married Oct. 27, 1939. They lived in a company house furnished by the Dam where John worked. They had a daughter, Hedy John on Oct. 1, 1942 and John was drafted and left to fight overseas in WWII in November of 1942 and didn't return until 1945.
On Nov. 23, 1948 they had another daughter, Zelta Lucille. In 1950, John got a job with El Paso in Tucson working on the pipeline, where his parents joined them. They moved several times all within several months until they came to Farmington where they stayed.
Janice was a charter member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church formed in 1956. On May 19, 1956 a 3rd daughter was born Fredda Ann. She was a Christian lady that loved to cook and her food was always welcome at church fellowships. Janice was a wonderful "nurse" to her family and gracious host to many nieces and nephews that would stay for awhile. She touched many lives and led a lot of people to the Lord. She worked many years in the San Juan Hospital Insurance Office.
After John died in 1984, Janice stayed in Arkansas so she could be in her own home. She married Pete Hampton in 1989 and they had a great companionship and took many trips together. When he died in 1998 she moved back to Farmington where she enjoyed many family get togethers, until her health declined and she went to Life Care, where the staff took excellent care of her.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, John Douglass and Pete Hampton.
She leaves behind her daughters, Hedy (Larry), Sorrow, Zelta (Steve) Medley and Fredda (Jeff) Cook; six grandchildren, Tara Willburn (Joe), Tatia Fernandez, Melanie Clements (Patrick), Scott Medley, (Amy), Amber Kurtz (Shawn), Kari Woods (Robert); 13 great-grandchildren Tylan, Kyler and Shea Berhost, Zane and Jessica Jenise Willburn, Tezzarae Fernandez, Keaton and Kason Medley, Zachary and Owen Clements, Baylee and Madyson Kurtz and Kinzley Woods.
Cremation will take place and graveside services are pending with Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688.
