James P. Riley, departed from this world on Saturday, September 14, 2013. Born James Patrick Riley on January 5, 1928, he remained until his dying day the quintessential Chicago Irishman, committed to home and family. He saw 85 years, many of the latter spent in idyllic enjoyment of those things he loved most: fishing, family and gardening. A perfect day was one spent on Quality Waters with one of his kids, and he loved nothing better than a big fish on a small fly, or the feel of rich black earth between his fingers. His garden is a quiet place, reminiscent of a Japanese setting as well it might be. He spent four years in Japan with the 13th Signal Company at war's end, the lone soldier at a remote outpost on Mount Fuji. The experience shaped him, as well as such things do, and it was not a bad shaping all in all. Jim was a thoughtful and loving husband, father and grandpa, and his presence will be missed at the family gatherings and in the small daily rituals which bespeak his passing. Jim is survived by his wife, Shirlee and an extended family of children, grandkids, great-grandchildren and fishin' buddies which in true Irish fashion, reaches "from sea to shining sea." He lived his days by his own code, marched to his own drum. May he be at peace. Cremation has taken place and no service is planned. It was his wish. Jim's care is entrusted to Alternative Choice, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington, 505-325-9611.
