Harry Jay Mills, 79, of Farmington, NM, joined our Heavenly Father Sunday, April 30, 2017. He was born July 18, 1937, in Wheatland, Wyo. to Harry J. Mills and Frances Libbey Mills.
Jay married his beloved wife Phillis Ann Kennedy on Dec. 22, 1985 here in Farmington. Together they built a loving family which included son William A. Kennedy of Denver, Colorado, daughter, Debora L. Martinez, and son-in-law, John A. Martinez of Farmington. They provided him with three loving grandchildren and five adoring great-grandchildren transforming him into Grandpa Jay by which he is more affectionately known. Jay also has three children prior to their marriage including Greg Mills, David Mills and Pam Miller and many grandchildren.
Jay worked in construction in the area for many years and contributed his talents to many of the commercial buildings in this area including St. Mary's Catholic Church in Farmington, the remodel of Swinburne Elementary, which is now the CATE Center, Naaba Ani Elementary in Bloomfield, and the hospital and shopping center in Gallup. From this, he became an independent contractor who built many custom homes in the area with his wife through their business Homes Extraordinare, Inc. Through hard work and perseverance Jay and Phillis maintained a successful business, made many friends in the community and were very actively involved in all aspects of building throughout NM. Jay served as the president of the San Juan County Home Builders Association and went on to serve as the president of the NM Home Builders Association.
A loving and generous man, Jay was always quick to help a friend and provided great support and strength to his family. His loud and joyous voice could be heard across a room and his hard work and dedication are rarely matched. Beyond family and work, Jay loved to travel in their RV and internationally and always made friends no matter what country he was visiting. He will be greatly missed and always loved.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, sisters, their spouses, sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
