Glenn Winwar Byrnes, 95, of Farmington, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, in Farmington. He was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Wis., to Henry and Elizabeth Byrnes.
Glenn will be remembered for his large stature and voice. "Chei" as he is known by his girls, will be greatly missed. After serving in World War II and teaching at the state hospital in Michigan. Glenn moved his family out west, where he taught and coached for years at Shiprock High School. Later he coached girls basketball at Navajo Academy School. He was inducted into the Catholic League Coaches Hall of Fame in 1978.After retirement he and Arlene moved to Mesa, Ariz., where he occasionally substituted at various schools up until his 90th year. Glenn was a true Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, no matter their success.
The family wishes to thank Guardian Angel Home Health, Crane's Roost, Dr. Burns and finally all the staff at San Juan Manor for their love and care.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wife Arlene P. Byrnes; daughter Debrah Lynn Byrnes; his parents; brother Ernest Byrnes and one grandchild.
He is survived by his sons, James K. (Leslie) Byrnes and Glenn T. (Dawn) Byrnes; daughter Allison L. Byrnes; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St. in Farmington.
