Gilbert Stanley Hughes Jr., 90, of Farmington, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015, in Farmington. He was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Ambridge, Pa., to Gilbert and Clara Hughes.
Gilbert was one of nine children and he graduated high school in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He received a Purple Heart medal in the Battle of Monte Cassino. Upon return he attended and graduated from college with a degree in chemistry.
Gilbert married Delores and had two daughters. He then followed the calling to the ministry. He attended Dallas Theological Seminary. After graduation he moved to the Navajo Reservation and started a ministry to the Native Americans. While living there he was also employed with A.C. Houston Second Hand Lumber, where he learned to speak the Navajo language. He and Delores settled at Dutchman's Hill after retirement, where they enjoyed their cats, dogs, bike rides, hill climbing, bird watching, playing the accordion and sharing their vast knowledge of the scripture.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife Delores Hughes; daughter Shirley Brinkerhoff; parents, Gilbert and Clara Hughes; brothers, Otto Hughes, Howard Hughes and Charles Hughes; and his sisters, Mirion Kramer and Edna Perrault. He is survived by his daughter Jeannie Lowenhaupt; brothers, Art Hughes, Gerald Hughes, Nelson Hughes, Melvyn Hughes and Dale Hughes; grandchildren, Marcus (Katrina) Brinkerhoff, Melanie (Geoff) Brock, Ryan Brinkerhoff and Justin Kuhn; and his great-grandchildren, Anna Brock, Abby Brock and Geoff Brock.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 19 at Bethel Baptist Church, 201 Heiland Road in Aztec, officiated by Bob Schlaugher. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, in Cedar Hill.
Pallbearers are Marcus Brinkerhoff, Leo Ulibarri, William Taylor, Jesse Graham, Steve Whatley and Jacob Whatley.
