Gary Horace Moffett, beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, returned home to heavenly Father on Monday, Sept. 7, 2015. His service and devotion to God, family and community will be greatly missed. He was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Duncan, Ariz., to Horace Ammon Moffett and Beatrice Johnson.
His childhood included carefree outdoor activities with his brothers, where he developed a love for the outdoors and learned mechanical skills that he would retain for the remainder of his life. By 1942, the family owned a dairy farm in La Plata, where Gary grew up fast by milking cows, herding cattle from horseback and operating the Ford tractor and other farm equipment. But life for Gary really began when the family sold the farm and moved into Farmington. In early 1948, he met Nedra. Gary enjoyed a loving marriage with his lifelong sweetheart for 62 years. Together, they were blessed with a large family.
Gary demonstrated his faith and devotion to the Savior, Jesus Christ, throughout his life. He taught his family -- through precept and example -- to cherish honesty, love the scriptures, keep covenants and especially to work hard.
Gary is survived by his wife, Nedra Jean Smith; his brothers, Lonnie (LaVon) and Alan (Beverly); his sons, Calvin (Debra), Robert, Rodger, Mitchel (Shirley), Russell (Kathleen), Christopher (Heather) and Terrell; his daughter, Melinda (Jeffrey) Claunch; 27 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sister, Iva Lewis; sons, David and Derrell; granddaughter, Danika; and great-grandson, Ian.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 400 W. Apache St. in Farmington, with interment to follow at Memory Gardens, 6917 E. Main St. in Farmington.
Gary's care is entrusted to the Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688.
