Eugene Lee Current

March 16, 1947 — September 18, 2016

Eugene "Gene" Lee Current, 69, of Aztec, passed from this life Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, in Aztec. He was born March 16, 1947, at Mercy Hospital in Durango, Colo. to Eugene R. "Sonny" Current (deceased) and Emma Rosalie Lawson Current. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Gene was raised in Aztec, next door to the old barber shop. He spent many hours chasing and riding on the top of the old DNRG Train. At the age of 10 his family moved to Farmington where he began school at McKinley Elementary, later attending Tibbetts Middle School followed by his High School days at Farmington High. He graduated in 1965 having played football and baseball throughout his high school days, coached in baseball by his dad, "Sonny" Current. After graduation, he and his buddies went to college "to learn" and "get an education." On one of his visits home for the summer, he met his sweetheart, Sue Current, at a dance at the Boys and Girls Club - never to be parted, they were married on June 7, 1968. His hobbies all his life were fishing and hunting with his dad and brothers. He spent many days "water dogging" with his dad. In 1970 Gene was drafted, on Mother's Day, into the Armed Services during the Vietnam War. Gene and Sue were sent to California for Basic Training and then to Louisiana. Shortly after, he was transferred to Germany for the remainder of his service. After his service, Gene and Sue moved to Farmington where he worked in the Oilfield. In 1972, he and his sweetheart became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1974, Gene became a "cowboy" he loved to rope and ride. Later, their growing family moved to Texas for about 20 years, returning to Aztec in 1999, where he started a Well Servicing company, LCE Well Service. He sold his business in 2005 and retired. After retirement you could always find Gene, with his family, fishing on the quality waters, rooting for his favorite baseball teams, attending his grandkids sporting events, serving in his church callings, and perfecting his reloading and marksmanship skills. He raised 4 fine children and loved 11 grandchildren. He had an unwavering testimony, knowledge and love for his Father in Heaven, and his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Eugene R. "Sonny" Current; grandparents, Ray B. Current, Sadie Current, Arthur Lawson and Emma Rosa Lawson.
