Eugene ""Gene"" L. Coen, 83, of Aztec, died on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012. He was born July 11, 1929, in Madrid, to Ivan and Francis (Capt) Coen.
In his early years he lived in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Pagosa Springs, Colo. Later he attended most of his school years in Roswell, where he graduated.
During this time he spent his summers and extra time with his grandparents in Hillsboro and many happy hours with his grandfather mining.
Upon graduation he immediately went into the Navy. after 3 months of boot camp he went to Key West, Fla., for 9 months of schooling and graduated number 1 in a class of 200. He then was assigned to Sonar on a destroyer where he spent the next four years. He enjoyed the years he spent in the Navy.
It wasn't too long after Navy life that he ended up in Farmington working in the oil and gas industry.
He enjoyed gardening, photography, the outdoors, watching animal life, fishing and hunting.
Maybe his greatest passion in life was reading. As an avid reader, he never bothered with fiction. It would be impossible to count the books on history, WWII and true experiences he read.
Gene loved and was proud of his large family. The grandchildren were especially dear to his heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Louis Coen and Ernest Coen.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice (Saline) Coen, and 8 children, Gale (Vernon) Perkins, Caren (Craig) Marcum, Arlene Coen, Craig Coen, Glenda (J.D.) Dees, Joni (Mike) Gay, Chris (Teresa) Coen, and Lisa Coen; 11 grandchildren, Shane Marcum, Dacia (David) Smith, James Perkins, Casey Perkins, Brittani Henry, Ashley Henry, Tylor Heath, Paige Dees, Connor Dees, Justin Coen, Danica Coen and Avery Smith; his sister-in-law, Nona, of Española; brother, Frank (Catherine) Coen, of DeBary, Fla. and treasured nieces and nephews.
