Our beloved wife, mother and sister, Emily Jane Nickerson, passed into God’s grace Thursday, June 8, 2023 at home in the care of her loving husband of 55 years, Nick. Emily Jane Nickerson was born September 29, 1947, in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Guy Wesley and Georgia Margaret (Forbes) Dupre. She was one of nine children; three boys (Gene, Gary and Roy) and six girls (Carolyn, Roseanne, Donna, Jane, Emma, and Janet). The family moved from a rural farming area near Colorado Springs to Grand Junction, Colorado where Jane attended school including Mesa State University.
Jane met Milton “Nick” Nickerson while he was employed with General Acceptance Corporation in Grand Junction. Their first date was to a Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Valentine dinner and dance in 1967 where she was a member. Jane was a long-time member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and served in several leadership roles including chapter president at one time. Jane loved her flowers, traveling, ceramics, and spending time with her family, especially holidays.
Jane and Nick were married on August 26, 1967, three days after he returned from U. S. Army basic and advanced combat training for three and a half months at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in preparation for deployment to the war in Viet Nam.
His unit’s deployment was delayed because the President of the United States and Congress decided to end deployment to Viet Nam and reorganize our military as a group of professional employees. After their first child Julie was born in 1968 they moved to Denver as part of Nick’s employment in management with CIT Financial. Eventually, they made their home in Farmington, NM where Joe and Jessica were born.
After 12 years in the insurance business along with her husband, Jane started Dream Travel as an agent of a larger travel agency. She felt she was experienced enough to succeed in the travel business after she and Nick had traveled to several places in Europe and South America in addition to Canada and Australia.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Georgia Dupre, her brothers Gene and Gary Dupre, and her sister Janet Davis. She is survived by her daughter Julie Nickerson (fiancé Michael) of Albuquerque, son Joe Nickerson (wife Farrah) of Albuquerque, and daughter Jessica Dalton (husband Mike) of Farmington. Jane and Nick have also been blessed with nine grandchildren: Joshua and Amelia Barela; J.C., Matthew, and Zoey Nickerson; and Michael, Kessy, Brighton, and Lilly Dalton.
