Funeral services for Ellen Martine Slim, 88, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Crownpoint. Burial in Crownpoint Community Cemetery. Visititation will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Slim died May 27, 2013, in Gallup. She was born July 15, 1924, in Heart Butte, into the Salt People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.
Slim was a homemaker, weaver, rancher, Navajo herb medicine collector, storyteller and took care of her nieces and nephews. she enjoyed cooking, having family celebrations and gatherings, crocheting, doing word searches and jigsaw puzzles, and was very loving and generous to others. Slim loved to tell stories to her grandchildren and travel, and her favorite color was purple.
Survivors include her sons Tommy Castillo, of Wendover, Nev., Johnny Castillo, of Farmington, Leo Paul Castillo, of Crownpoint, and Jerry Castillo, of Crownpoint; daughters Kathy Clanton, of Medford, Ore., Esther Manuelito, of Farmington, and Agnes Sajbin, of Adelphi, Md.; Brother Roy martin, of Torreon; sister June Martine, of Crownpoint; 26 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Marie Rico Martin; husband Tom Slim; daughters Gladys Castillo, Nancy Castillo and Ethel Castillo; sister Annie Castillo; and brothers Herbert Martin, Woody Martin, Wilson Martine and Jonah Martin.
Pallbearers were Tommy Castillo, Johnny Castillo, Leo Paul Castillo, Jerry Castillo, Bryan Castillo-Garcia and Conroy Martin.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Crownpoint Chapter House.
Cope Memorial Chapel of Gallup was entrusted with arrangements.
