EDWARD HAROLD SYPHER
August 19, 1930 - January 25, 2017
Edward Harold Sypher, 86, of Farmington, New Mexico passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in Farmington. Edward was born August 19, 1930 in Langlois, Oregon in his grandmother's home and was the son of Harold Charles Sypher and Ruby L. (Williams) Sypher.
Edward graduated from high school at Langlois Union High in Langlois, Oregon where he was the class valedictorian and also had a year in college of the Sequoias in Visalia, California. He was a veteran of the US Army (Korean War) in 1951 and was honorably discharged for shoulder injury at Camp Roberts, California. His memberships included the Kiwanis Club where he served on the ESD Board and was also a Rotarian in the Rotary Club in both Rosenberg and Coos Bay, Oregon .
Right out of college he was offered a job as a cartoonist for Walt Disney but turned that down and spent many years working in the logging industry, then latter as County Road master, a private clothing distributor, and completed his career as a district service representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Roseburg and Coos Bay Oregon. He retired in 1992.
Edward was an active and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions. Among those were branch president, as a Bishop twice, full-time missionary (Africa), district president, stake president, patriarch, family history center staff, employment missionary, high priest group leader and taught seminary along with his sweet wife Luella (deceased).
Edward's hobbies were golfing, landscaping, politics, gardening, athletics, inventing and art. He was known as the "King of Projects"! He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Edward Benjamin Sypher and Eliza Russell Sypher, Quincy A. Williams, Bertha A. (Davis) Williams; his wife Luella Grace (Higgins) Sypher, son Terry Edward Sypher; and a brother Richard Lee Sypher.
Edward leaves behind his sons Glendon Harold Sypher and David Merrill Sypher; daughters Roxanne Mae Sypher-Getscher and Shirley Lea Sypher-Tew; 28 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and many dear friends.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services for Edward are Saturday, May 27th at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 950 Delaware Ave. SE, Bandon, Oregon with Mike Jensen, branch president conducting. No public interment will take place.
Honorary pallbearers are Mark, Koji, Ken and Michael Nagamatsu, Benjamin, Jordon and Andrew Sypher, Nathan, Merrill, and John Tew, Jake, Daniel, Drew, Matthew and Levi Sypher.
Donations/memorials may be made in Edward's name to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Center.
