Dorothy Derry Doerfert, 91, of Aztec, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 surrounded by her three children. She was born Feb. 2, 1925 in Adams, Massachusetts.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Hans M. Doerfert and her parents C. Malcolm Derry and Marguerite "Peg" Bond Derry. She is survived by her children, Anne Doerfert McGoey and husband Richard McGoey, Karen Sue Doerfert and wife Karen Louise Thompson, Peter Doerfert and wife Kit Doerfert; four grandchildren and their spouses, Arthur McGoey and wife Sophie Brasfield, Robert McGoey and partner Luisa Zamora, Doug Doerfert and wife Karen Bertucci Doerfert, Whitney Doerfert Schrader and husband George Schrader; four (soon to be five) great-grandchildren, Penelope and Thomas Brasfield, Liesel Doerfert and her unborn sibling, and Norah Schrader. She is also survived by Lesleeann Corey Reynoso and Lisa Corey Davis who chose Dorothy and Hans to become their guardians after the death of their own parents.
People who knew Dorothy recall that she always spoke kindly and was ready to help others. In her quiet way, she touched the lives of many people who needed help or comfort. Family was her top priority. She also had an active professional life as a nurse and volunteer in the community.
Dorothy graduated, 1948, from Simmons College of Nursing in Boston with a Bachelor of Science degree. Her nursing career included Four Corners Mental Health and Four Corners Good Samaritan Village. She volunteered with the American Red Cross; the Kiwanis Club at the local, regional, and international levels; and participated in the Civil Air Patrol.
As an active member of the Aztec Presbyterian Church, she participated in the choir and multiple church groups. Her multiple hobbies included sewing, playing violin, learning new craft projects, and golfing. After retirement, she enjoyed oil painting, a family tradition that both her mother and grand-mother had pursued.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 22, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the Aztec Presbyterian Church, 205 N Church Ave, Aztec, NM 87410. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to either: (1) Aztec Presbyterian Church Breast Cancer Fund, 205 N.
