Lifetime Bondad resident Donald George Paxton died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, at Cottonwood Inn in Durango. He was 77.
Donald was born to George and Joyce Paxton on Dec. 8, 1937, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1955 and then attended Fort Lewis AandM College. After college he joined the National Guard, from which he was honorably discharge in 1962.
On Dec. 28, 1956, he married Thelma "Babe" Perry in Aztec. The couple ranched together in Bondad for many years before Babe's passing in 1978. The couple raised three sons.
He had a passion for Thoroughbred horse racing and spent many years training and owning race horses in New Mexico. Many of his retired horses ended up at his home in Bondad where he cared for them in their retirement.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Babe Paxton.
He is survived by his children Matt Paxton(Laurie) of Albuquerque, Jeff Paxton(Kim) of Bondad, and Joe Paxton(Natalie) of Aztec; 6 granddaughters, Kristin Pettinger(Matt) of Eaton,CO, Katie Mitchell(Kelly) of Bondad, Kassi Gray(Matt) of Durango, Briana Paxton of Bondad, Shelby Paxton and MiKayla Paxton both of Aztec; and 8 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at ELHI Community Center, 115 Ute Street, Ignacio, Colorado.
Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery, 494 E. 2nd Street, Durango, Colorado. A reception will be held at the Florida Mesa Grange Hall, 656 Hwy 172, following interment.
