Darren Lee Bitsuie, 34, of Albuquerque, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, in Flagstaff, Ariz. He was born April 15, 1981, in Gallup, to David Bitsuie and Jane M. Makovicka. He was born to the Czech Republic and born for the Tlaashchii (Red Bottom People).
Darren graduated in 1999, from Kirtland High School and received his master's degree from Boston University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 2000 to 2006, and was honorably discharged. He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, flying remote controlled helicopters and being with family and friends in New Mexico and Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frances and Francis Makovicka and Helen Shorty Pine and Jack Bitsuie. He is survived by his parents, Jan Makovicka and David Bitsuie (Melinda Begay); brothers, Scott Bitsuie, Stephen Bitsuie, Julian Bitsuie and Danny Begay.
A funeral service for 10 a.m. today at Cope Memorial Chapel of Kirtland, Roy Henry officiating. A reception will follow at the Riverside Bread of Life Church, 713 Road 6100 in Fruitland.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 4 in the Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 N. Guadalupe St. in Santa Fe.
Pallbearers are Scott Bitsuie, Stephen Bitsuie, Julian Bitsuie, Danny Begay, Jason Pyne and Ron Makovicka.
