Cordelia Azucena Archunde, 99, of Blanco, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, in Blanco. She was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Tierra Amarilla, to Jose Porforio and Carmen Abeyta.
She was our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and teacher. She graduated from Aztec High School and had been teaching at Los Martinez below Navajo Lake. She eventually received her teaching certificate from Highlands University and UNM. She taught for over 40 years and then retired in 1985.
Cordelia married her beloved husband Herman on July 4, 1942, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., just before he left for the war. This union spanned 61 years. She was actively involved with BirthRight for many years after teaching. This was her passion, for she belived that the unborn were truly God's gifts, no matter the circumstances. She left an example of faith to follow as she continued teach us until her death.
Cordelia was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Archunde; 11-month-old son, Mark Anthony Archunde; parents, Jose Porforio and Carmen Abeyta; brothers, Isaac Abeyta and J.P. Abeyta; and sisters, Celina Sanchez and Ernestina Abeyta. She is survived by her sons, Herman Archunde Jr. (Carol), Greg Archunde (Gloria) and Terrence Archunde (Bettie); daughter, Brenda L. McNeal (Ron); brothers, Joe Abeyta and Alex Abeyta; sisters, Lola Chavez and Martha Abeyta; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St. in Farmington.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5 also at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Farmington. Interment will follow in the family cemetery at Archunde Farms in Blanco.
Pallbearers are her 17 grandchildren.
