Bettilou Patrick Chase, 84, of Shiprock, passed away on Monday, Jan. 9, 2015, in Shiprock. She was born Dec. 21, 1930, in Rosebud, S.D., to Joseph and Verald Brave Patrick.
Bettilou lived in many places while growing up. A few places were Wyoming, Towoac, Colo., Gallup, Tohatchi and Shiprock. She attended Rehoboth Christian School and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Waterflow. She also attended nursing school in Louisville, Ky., before coming home and marrying Chester Chase instead of returning to nursing school.
Bettilou was employed with the BIA boarding school for approximately 40 years before retiring. She was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Shiprock and she loved to help with church functions, bingos, parish bazaars and yard sales. She enjoyed times with family, watching and reading mystery stories and cop shows. She also enjoyed watching and feeding the hummingbirds. Bettilou liked to crotchet and made each one her kids a blanket. She liked to plant flowers and watch them grow and bloom. She so loved our cats and dogs and they loved her as well. She enjoyed going to yard sales in and around the area. She also loved sweets and chocolates and was a big Elvis fan. Betti was a very loving mother and grandma. At home, she was known as "Gran." She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.
Bettilou was preceded in death by her sons, Roland Chase and Chester Chase Jr. and her parents. She is survived by her husband Chester Chase Sr.; her son Anthony Chase; daughters, Winona Chase, Darlene Chase, Patricia Chase and Margaret Chase; grandchildren, Justin (Dana) Woodis, Christine Smith (Ian Chavez), Jillian Woodis (Delbert Thomas), James (Dellyse) Chase and Kirsten Thomas; and great-grandchildren, Joshua Smith. Jade Woodis, Hunter Woodis, Trinity Woodis, Rowan Woodis, Chase Woodis, Darielle Penn, Chaunelle Penn, Darian Penn, Jasmyn Chase and Tiana Chase.
A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan.17 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Shiprock.
A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m., following the rosary at Christ the King Catholic Church, with Father Tim Farrell as celebrant.
A reception will follow in the Shiprock Catholic Center.
