Barbara Jo Blackman Pennington was born on April 1, 1929 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was the first child of Paul and Bessie Blackman. She had two younger sisters, Patty and Shirley, and one brother, Paul. Barb married George "Red" Pennington on October 24, 1947, in Silver City, New Mexico. She loved working in the grocery business with Red. They started out with a grocery store in Silver City, and then moved to Farmington, New Mexico. In 1962, they moved to nearby Bloomfield and started Farmers Market, which is still run by the Pennington family today. Over the years, Barb and Red owned homes in other parts of the country, but their hearts were always in Bloomfield. In her later years, Barb could be found at her beloved "shop" in Bloomfield where she and Red kept their car collection.
Barb was well known by her friends and loved ones as a profoundly generous woman who loved the thrill of helping others. Barb's beloved husband and son, Ted, both passed away in 2004. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Buddy Dewey; her daughter-in-law, Debbi Vavra; nine grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
