Anna "Lorraine" Powers, 91, passed away peacefully October 3rd, at home in Farmington, NM, where she had lived for over forty years. Lorraine was born in the Midwest on August 8, 1924, to Thomas and Anna Gorman. She showed her entrepreneurial spirit and determination when she was a pre-teen selling apples to employees of businesses on Saturdays, so she could make enough profit to go to the movies, which she loved. Her family, who had moved around to several states, moved to Southern California when she was thirteen. She loved playing on her high school tennis team. Because of family finances, she switched her courses from college-prep to business. After graduation, she got a job as a file clerk at the airbase and shortly became a supervisor. Not long after, she met the love of her life, her husband, James "Jim" Powers, at a USO dance. A few weeks after their marriage, he was sent overseas to fight in WWII (U.S. Army). Upon his return, they started a family. They were blessed by a daughter, Karen, and a son, Gary. The family enjoyed deep-sea and lake fishing, camping, and bicycling, dogs, and horses. After Jim had worked many years in construction, Jim and Lorraine decided to start their own commercial construction business. Lorraine ran the office and managed the finances. Together they built Powers Construction Company, Inc. and became known for their integrity and quality workmanship.
Writing poetry helped Lorraine after Jim died, and she also became more active in the women's group at her church. She loved to laugh and was always more concerned for others than for herself. Lorraine was a loving, wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was spunky, optimistic, and determined, which helped her live to 91. She will always live in the hearts of those who loved her as an example and inspiration. She will be missed very much and always loved.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, James, her two brothers, Leo and Raymond, and her husband, James. She is survived by her children, Karen McDonough, and Gary and (Patty) Powers, her grandchildren (in order of age) Rebecca Duke, Jeffrey and (Sheena) Powers, Melissa and (Brian) Williamson, Holly McDonough, Jason and (Kinsey) Powers, Joshua Powers, James Powers, and 13 great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held Friday, October 9, at the Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held Saturday, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 808 N. Monterey Ave. of Farmington with Pastor Brian Adams officiating , followed by interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 6917 East Main St., Farmington.
