Alice Begay Hammitt, 79, of Farmington, died on Tuesday, March 13, 2013 in Farmington. She was born Nov. 18, 1933 in Burnham to Cecil and Helen Bunnie Begay. She was born to Standing Tree/Bitter Water and born for Water-flowing Together, chi'-Folded Arm People and nali's-Bear.
Her hobbies were, gardening in her yard, ""No weeds,"" kept a clean house and home, weaving, loving her family, just be a loving mom, grandma and great-grandma, that she was; and try to keep the traditions alive. She would teach and tell her children and family about them.
Alice worked odd jobs, clean houses, dishwasher, waitress, of course, being a ""mom.""
She went to school in California. She lived in the Four Corners area; Colo., N.M., Utah and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. She then moved back to New Mexico.
Alice had many friends in all places she lived and went to. she was an amazing, beautiful, loving, caring woman. we love her so much.
Alice was preceded in death by her son, Larry Hammitt; daughter, Annette Hammitt; parents; brothers, John Cecil Begay Sr., Bill Begay, Leo Begay and Samuel Begay; sister, Phyllis Collins; grandparents, Mrs. Madrid, Mr. Sandwall, Elmer Benally and Cila ba' chit' and grandchild, Craig Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest E. Hammitt; sons, Eddie Hammitt, Edison Hammitt, Emos Hammitt and Edward Hammitt; son-in-law, Randy J. Lewis; daughters, Ernestine Maestas and Erma H. Lewis; daughter-in-laws, Patty White, Margery Cly Hammitt and Linda Tso Hammitt; brothers, Paul Begay, Melvin Begay and Benjamin ""Benny"" Begay; sisters, Lilly Begay and Annette Begay; grandchildren, Timothy, Chantle, Gregory ""Bucky""-Edison kids; Emilio, Emery, Emmett, Monique-Emos, Kids; Lalinia, Latoya-Edward kids; Elaine-Ernestine kid; Angeles (LA), Gerald, Dakota, Cheyenne-Erma kids and 17 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at The Oasis Church, 1601 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington with Rev. Raymond Sales officiating.
Burial will follow in the Carson Family Cemetery.
Reception will be after burial at the Huerfeno Chapter House.
Pallbearers are Angeles R. Lewis, Gabriel Nelson, Dakota R. Lewis, Gerald E. Lewis, Vernon Begay and Titus Tompson.
