Abraham "Abe" A. Chavez, 78, of Aztec, passed quietly at home on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013. He was born on July 27, 1934 to Silviano and Teresa Chavez in Pagosa Springs, Colo.
He grew up in Turley. He married his wife, Lina Sanchez Jan. 11, 1958.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather (seven) and great-grandfather (five). He served in the Air Force 1956, retired from El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1989, after 31 years of dedicated service to the company.
His hobbies included camping, fishing, and gardening, playing cards and he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He had many good and close friends with whom he loved to joke.
Passing before him were his parents; oldest brother, Silvianito Chavez and youngest sister, Dora Torrez.
Abe is survived by son, Nicholas D. Chavez and four daughters, Ramona Hilliard, Orla (Robert) Lybrook, Amalia (Kyle) Westall and Virginia "Jeanie" (Larry) Hatch. He is also survived by his siblings, Claudio Chavez, of Aztec, Ruperta Sewell, of Tehachapi, Calif., Flavio Chavez, of Aztec and Dennis Chavez, of Blanco.
Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at Cope Memorial in Aztec.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, in Aztec with Father Matthew Keller celebrant.
Interment will follow in Aztec Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Luciano Valdez, Adam Hayes, Robert Lybrook, Cameron Lybrook, Antonio Benson, Dylan Westall and Dennis Gonzales.
Honorary Pallbearers are Elvis Hilliard, Larry Chavez, Norman Chavez and Chris Torrez.
Abe's care is entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 405 S. Main Ave., in Aztec 505-334-9332.
